WHAT IS LASIK?

If you are looking to reduce the need for glasses or contacts, there is a procedure that can give you your visual freedom. This procedure is called LASIK.  LASIK stands for Laser in-situ keratomileusis.  LASIK is a non invasive, refractive surgery that changes the shape of your cornea using a laser that admits an ultraviolet beam of light and this is what can correct your vision.   The beam of light reshapes the top layer of the cornea and this can allow an image to focus directly on the retina, creating clearer, brighter sight.  The laser sends calculated pulses of ultraviolet light to the cornea based on pre-operative measurements and these light pulses remove a microscopic layer of the cornea and this changes its shape.

Before surgery, numerous tests are done to find the exact measurements of your eye that need to be treated by the laser during surgery.   A controlled computer, operated by your LASIK surgeon, takes an image of your eye and creates an image map that will provide exact measurements.   This will create a vision correction plan for your surgeon to follow during surgery.  Because this surgical procedure is customized to your eye specifically, it can produce even greater visual results.  Although results may vary from patient to patient, this procedure is highly successful and has few side effects.  Most patients recover quickly and are back to their daily activities.

There are different types of refractive surgeries and at Anderson and Shapiro, we offer the best technology in vision correction and our skilled surgeons are here to make the best choices for you and your visual needs.  If you are considering LASIK,  call (608) 827-7705 to schedule an appointment and our experts will help you make the right decision about whether LASIK eye surgery is right for you.
